GTA Donates Computer Equipment To GPSS

GTA recently gave $30,000 worth of used computer equipment to Guam Public School System(GPSS). GPSS’ Financial and Student Administrative Information System (FSAIS) division representatives received the nine pallets of equipment at GTA’s warehouse on July 6, 2005.
GPSS’ Data Processing Manager, Vince Dela Cruz, said the public schools’ libraries will be among the first places to receive the used equipment. “We know the Guam Public School System has limited funding for new equipment. Instead of discarding these computer equipment that are in good working condition, our Information Technology staff purged our old files and operating systems so that the hardware is still useable. We know students and administrators in the GPSS campuses will welcome this equipment,” said Karri Perez, GTA Vice-President of Human Resources and Administration.
The nine pallets consisted of computer monitors, micro-processors (towers), servers, token rings, accessories such as power cords, mouse handsets, and some software programs.

The organizing committee of GTA’s goodwill games, with support from GTA’s Human Resources and Executive Office, presented Agana Heights Mayor’s office with over $250 worth of new landscaping equipment on June 09, 2005 in exchange for GTA’s use of the village’s field and gymnasium during its employee friendship games with Verizon Saipan. The 1st Annual GTA-Verizon Friendship Tournament was held during the Memorial Day three-day weekend on Guam, with a majority of the games played at Agana Heights Field and Gym.
The new landscaping tools were donated to help the mayor’s office tend the grounds of the public sports field. Mayor Paul McDonald received the equipment on his village’s behalf. The equipment consisted of two wheel-barrows, hoses, spades, rakes and shovels.

GTA recently presented the Guam Fire Department six office cubicles to assist the agency in its eventual move to new office quarters. The office work stations comprise partitions, overhead storage bins, filing cabinets and table tops.
“We know the Guam Fire Department has limited funding for office furnishings and equipment. Instead of discarding these cubicles that are in good condition, we know that they are still attractive and morale boosting for the GFD’s future office,” said Ernie Galito, GTA Managing Director, Marketing and Product Development.

GTA’s galaide (Chamorro for outrigger canoe) placed first in the Women’s Division in the Karerån Galaide (racing canoe) Series 2005 organized by the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam and Guam Kayak and Canoe Federation (GKCF). The women’s team, ages ranging 14 to 18, from John F. Kennedy High School (JFK) paddled the GTA canoe to victory after four consecutive weekends of intense races off scenic Tumon Bay.
“We’re delighted that the JFK women’s team came out first place in our company galaide. Outrigger canoeing is a disciplined team sport and GTA is pleased to be associated with the development and promotion of such a healthy athletic activity among high school students. We hope more high school paddling teams enter next year’s series to raise the standard even higher,” said Bob Taylor, GTA’s president and CEO.
In the final and fourth race of the series on April 23, the JFK-GTA canoe finished first in the Women’s Distance Course, first in the Mix Slalom Course, second in the Women’s 500 meter sprint, second in the Mix 500 meter sprint and third in the Women’s Slalom Course. Points were awarded for each place in every race in the series and totaled to determine the teams’ standings. The JFK-GTA women’s team scored 54 points from all four races in the series. Five Guam public and private high schools participated in the competition.
Guam Kayak and Canoe Federation representative, Michelle Cerizo said outrigger canoeing is an official sport on Guam and the paddling league was organized to promote the sport among high school teenagers to develop their interest, teamwork and competitive skills for regional and national events. Cerizo said the GKCF hosts various outrigger canoe races throughout the year on Guam and the GTA galaide will continue to see action on the water at these races.

GTA co-sponsored the first Guam Youth Basketball Association’s (GYBA) 2005 Drug Free Youth Basketball Clinic and Summer League. The extensive four-month program, jointly presented by GYBA and Department of Parks and Recreation, elicited participation by some 1,100 kids in the Drug-Free clinics and between 93 to 98 teams signing up to play in the Summer League. The League begins on June 4 and ends on August 7 during the summer school break.
GTA’s commitment to community-based programs and organizations is influenced by agendas that address educational, cultural and social issues. The education of Guam’s youth, whether in the academic or extra-curricular sense, is one of GTA’s key social commitments. Said Bob Taylor, President and CEO of GTA, “The prosperity of Guam’s future lies in the betterment of today’s youth. Sportsmanship is a concept for children to learn not only in the sporting arena but in many aspects of life. We’re happy to support the GYBA’s goals in such a healthy activity.”
According to GYBA, parents and kids have fed back positive comments about the Drug Free clinics. “The clubs and their coaches have been doing an excellent job promoting being drug free and teaching basketball fundamentals. I believe the coaches’ training program has really helped the parent volunteers in teaching the fundamentals of sportsmanship and basketball,” said Joe Cepeda, GYBA President and coach for the 8-Under age group.

In response to the community’s need for telecommunication devices for deaf, hearing or speech impaired persons – GTA will be donating about 200 tele-typwriter (TTY) devices to the Department of Education and the Guam System for Assistance Technology (GSAT). TTY devices allow persons deaf, hearing or speech impaired persons to type messages which then get transmitted through a Telephone Relay Service communication assistant for translation.
The Department of Education has already expressed its appreciation for the generous donation. “We are very thankful the instruments will be put to good use…especially for students and in assisting in the communication needs for the schools,” said DOE Superintendent Juan Flores. “It will also help us comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations – particularly with DOE personnel and for those persons with hearing or speech impairments seeking employment.”
The TTY’s are slated for installation within DOE’s personnel office, PC Lujan elementary, Agueda Johnston middle school, John F. Kennedy High School, and George Washington High School. Meantime, GSAT plans to utilize the TTY’s to conduct training among the hearing impaired community.
